Puppy/Kitten care and vaccines During your new baby’s first visits, we try to thoroughly answer all of your new pet owner
questions. Diet, feeding schedules, deworming, socialization, training, and overall health questions are answered. We also
discuss spay and neuter procedures and their importance to your pet. A fecal sample should always be checked on a new puppy,
even if they have been dewormed in the past. Vaccines are given on 3-4 week intervals. Deworming is an important event in
all puppies’ lives, and it is very common for them to be infected with zoonotic parasites. With the right medication,
these parasites can be easily treated so your new pet starts life off healthy. |
Annual
Vaccines and health care guidelines Our vaccine schedules are taken from recommendations and protocols
at UC Davis. Yearly vaccines include Bordetella and Adenovirus (Kennel Cough) however, vaccines such as parvo/distemper/parainfluenza
should be administered every 3 years. Heartworm recommendations from the National Heartworm Society are followed, including
annual testing even when on a preventative. Heartworm preventative also deworms patients monthly helping keep family members
safe from parasitic infection. Yearly fecals are recommended. |
Geriatric care Annual exams are recommended, including blood work, urinalysis, fecals, glaucoma testing, chest
or abdominal radiographs, cardiac evaluation with ECG, and early renal disease testing. Many diseases can be caught with early
detection and the steps needed to alleviate the severity of the disease can be addressed. Diet changes are only one easy method
of helping with systemic diseases such as kidney, liver, and heart disease. |
Internal
Medicine | We cover all areas of internal medicine, including: Cardiology; Ophthalmology; Neurology; Dermatology; Gastroenterology;
Orthopedic surgery; Oncology; Endocrinology; among others. |
Radiology | Radiology –
or X-rays – help our veterinarians evaluate muscular-skeletal, cardiovascular(cardiopulmonary), gastrointestinal, reproductive
and urinary systems. Sierra View Animal Hospital is equipped
with the latest digital radiographic equipment, including dental radiographs. Special procedures including barium studies
and urogenital contrast studies can also be performed. |
Dental Care At Sierra View Animal Hospital, we offer veterinary dental services such as prophylaxis,
extractions, and teeth cleaning and polishing to help your pet keep that perfect smile. Just like people, pets need regular
dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup. If not removed, this buildup can lead to periodontal disease and more
serious health problems.
Dental diets and dental chews may help control plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth but do little to remove
plaque under the gum line. While nothing can take the place of regular visits to the veterinarian for checkups and cleaning,
ongoing follow up care at home is just as important in protecting your pet from dental problems that can become a serious
health threat. Dentistry procedures here at Sierra View Animal Hospital include full oral exam and pre anesthetic screen. If over
the age of 5, or if severe periodontal disease is present, dental radiographs, which allow us to evaluate the true nature
of the oral disease, are taken. Full dental scaling and polishing are performed and then dental extractions are done if indicated.
If there is significant pocketing between the teeth and gum, antibiotics can be injected to try and preserve the life of the
teeth. Your
pet then returns home with a beautiful smile, fresh breath, and hopes that his or her dental care will continue at home with
dental brushing, oral rinses, dental chews, and bones along with a healthy diet. Depending
on the severity of the dental disease, yearly dental cleanings are recommended. Remember to brush those teeth! |
